One big painting, again, and maybe finally

9.5′ x 10.5′, originally uploaded by leyaevelyn.

This is, I think, the final version of my first 9.5′ x 10.5′ painting. I started it a year and a half ago, thought I was through with it (mainly because a film company was using the studio I was working in and they were too difficult to work around). The painting looked good, it was mainly dark blue, people liked it, but I didn’t feel it was good enough. To me, it looked like every other painting I had been doing for a few years. It didn’t excite me. My work changed dramatically (from my point of view) just after I thought I was “finished” with this painting (and maybe because of it, at least partially); I needed to go back and work on it again.

The process of revising, redoing, reinventing the painting has been long. There were times when I thought I had lost it. Then it would come and go a few more times. I can’t think of anything more it needs now, so I am leaving it as it is. Maybe when I go back to the studio again, I’ll feel differently. I hope not. I’ve already started a second 9.5′ x 10.5′ painting. It’s coming along. And as usual, I learn so much from working with this scale.

About leyaevelyn

About thirty years ago, I moved from New York City to rural Nova Scotia. For an artist, it is a good place to live. Spacious and quiet. Despite the beautiful scenery and frequently grey skies, my abstract paintings focus on color, its expressive qualities and how it creates form and space.
